	Developing Families & Communities that Love Torah: Tools and Signposts for the Journey --- Joel Lurie Grishaver & Rabbi Phil Warmflash Show Description How do you make learning Torah a family process and build a community that studies? How does one move closer to the reality of la'asok b'divrei Torah—full engagement with Jewish learning—when families are often tentative and even intimidated by Jewish learning? During our time together we will (1) explore text that can help us to understand and to reach families, (2) share, learn, and practice strategies to engage families in learning, (3) identify the processes that can transform our communal institutions into environments that can reach and nurture families and communities of study and 4) extract the resources of the recently published Kadima: Practical Steps Toward a Vibrant Vision of Jewish Family Education as a strategic resource in this process While obviously appropriate for family educators, this track is also of value for rabbis, educators, lay leaders who work with Jewish families. 	The Biblical Conversation: Within Tanakh and Across the Ages --- Dr. Tamar Kamionkowski & Dr. Alan Levenson Show Description In everyday life, we are always making conversation. So too is the Hebrew Bible. The conversations are sometimes subtle and hard to track but the educator who can move beyond the first glance simplicity of a given text and hear the different voices within and surrounding the text has an opportunity to open up the world of eilu v'eilu even within the Biblical text. When the conversation is further enriched by midrashic exegesis the color, textures, and meanings of the text become even more vivid. Join Dr. Alan Levenson and Dr. Tamar Kamionkowski as they explore biblical texts from this rich perspective. This track is appropriate for both teachers of bible and educators interested in a more sophisticated understanding of Bible for their own Jewish enrichment. Threaded throughout the intensive will be opportunities for educators to examine the materials studied from the perspective of the class room teacher and the "stance" they adopt towards the teaching of Bible. 	Total Physical Response - Hebrew Through Movement: A Brain Friendly Way to Learn Hebrew --- Dr. Lifsa Schachter This track is closed as we have reached the maximum number of participants - Thank you for your interest Show Description Dr. Lifsa Schachter has adapted James Asher's book Learning Another Language Through Actions and applied it to teaching Hebrew to young children to 5th grade. An increasing number of Jewish parents and educators are alert to the importance of the Hebrew language as a key to building a strong Jewish identity. Research on the brain and the learning to read process highlights the importance of oral experience with language as a foundation for learning to make sense of the printed symbol. It also highlights the need to use methods that can help children learn Hebrew more effectively and more joyfully. Hide Description
	Active Jewish Learning: Strategies to Enliven Your Classroom* - Dr. Shoshana Silberman *Note: Participants in this intensive are asked to either bring or purchase the book Active Jewish Learning by Shoshana and Mel Silberman. Books will be for sale at the conference for a discount. Show Description This track provides an opportunity for educators to expand their repertoire of techniques and approaches to fully engage students in Jewish learning. By design, the track is very participatory and addresses four challenges of Jewish learning. Session one: How to Get Students Active From the Start. This session will focus on both team building activities and ways to best begin lessons and units of study, creating immediate learning involvement Session two: How to Help Students Acquire Knowledge. Both ideas for full –class and cooperative/small group learning will be explored. A major focus will be on how to have active and creative class discussions that involve each student Session three: How to Help Students Acquire Skills and Attitudes. How can learning skills effectively be fun? What strategies are there for helping students explore Jewish values? Session four: How to Make Learning Unforgettable. Our teaching efforts are meaningless unless students take away something from the class. The strategies presented will feature both cognitive and affective learning, as well as fun ways to evaluate what our students have actually learned. Hide Description
